I think there's enough to blame to go around, quite frankly. It would be hopelessly naive to say, "Well, only my side has refrained from the divisive political rhetoric that plagues America." From Karl Rove to the Vice President to the President himself, plenty of folks on the right side have made reconciliation difficult. I'm not exonerating Howard Dean, Vice President Gore, or anyone else on my side of the fence. I just think we have to recognize that we've all gotten a bit carried away. I think someone can disagree with another's positions on every single issue and still be civil. How do I know? Because that's my day to day life. Most of my family is conservative, and many of my friends are conservative. As someone in a tremendous position of leadership, I think the President has a great opportunity to build bridges. I don't think he's done that very well. You're very right that most of our country's leadership supported the war. You're also right that many folks on the left have now turned against the war. I'm not assure that I agree with your blanket statement that they all did so for political gain, though. I'm sure that some certainly have, but I think it's entirely possible for someone to look at the situation now and simply say, "I messed up. This war was a mistake." You may not agree, but I think that people could come to that conclusion legitimately. I think the media tends to put our differences under a microscope and blow them out of proportion. Most Americans, from all political backgrounds, share basic values. I think our political leaders do too. The disagreements have sharpened and become magnified lately, but there are still basic commonalities. We all want to defeat our country's enemies and help this nation live up to its greatest potential. We should never lose sight of those shared ideals.
