I was talking to a liberal Christian friend of mine (god love em) the other day. We got to talking about gay people somehow mainly because he always brings it up. I have a special affinity to the gay group just for your information because I have had a lot of encounters with them.
My first cousin died of aids back in the early nineties and I really liked him a lot and miss him. I also lost my brother in law to aids about a year ago. He was one of these miracle cases that contracted HIV in the eighties and lived 20 plus years before they had a medication cocktail available.
My nephew is gay and is a real good kid as well as my sister-in-law who is also gay. Consequently my liberal Christian friend comes to me as the expert on all things gay. Anyway as I already said he is a liberal meaning he has a great heart but is basically an imbecile when it comes to any kind of depth in understanding of classic Christian orthodoxy or even our role as moral stewards to Gods created order after the fall.
So he tells me that he believes in gay marriage and that Jesus did too! This I had to hear if for no other reason than to ensure Martin Luther completely turns over in his grave. His incredible theological insight came from the fact that Jesus never spoke against gay marriage or even gay people for that matter. The fact that Jesus omitted this topic he reasoned was simply because he endorsed it, being a guy of love and all.
Gee lets take that premise to its conclusion shall we my rationally impaired friend? If Jesus omits something it’s because he endorses it? Who would have thought how many sinners we close-minded Christians have besmirched all these years who were endorsed by Jesus all along?
For example Jesus never spoke against necrophilia because as we all know he was a big proponent of sex with the dead. He also left out bestiality because who was the Son of God to stand between a committed relationship between a man and his sheep?
Child sex was never mentioned though Jesus did say not to harm children, consequently the obvious conclusion is the child has to consent or at least be violated tenderly. Jesus didn’t speak about pornography because sex between unmarried humans is art and beautiful and should be sketched, painted, filmed and sculpted all for our God ordained voyeuristic pleasure.
As a matter of fact the only time Jesus is actually broached on the subject of human marriage it is in the context of divorce and Jesus responded quite vehemently. Not only was divorce a sin and permitted only because of our sinful nature but he also emphasized God the Father created us male/female and this covenant was not to be breeched.
The obvious reason Jesus never brought up gay marriage is because it was never even considered amongst the culture. No culture in human history ever felt it was appropriate or good for the community since marriage is designed for procreation which can only happen between opposite sexes and to ensure a family unit of both genders to properly raise, educate and inform the child through adolescence.
Gay marriage exists as a result of a post modern anti Christian philosophy that started in Europe and has seeped to our shores. If the liberal Christian wants to emphasize love and embrace fellowship with sinners first, I am on board. The idea of holding Christians accountable for their behavior though is first church orthodoxy and to compromise the reality of some types of behavior being sin is an injustice to the immutable truth established by the God of the universe. We as believers are expected to love and gently lead the brethren to truth especially when they have strayed.
I see the liberal Christian for what he is, a follower who has been unconsciously brainwashed by a secular culture and doesn’t know it. We have all been young and dumb once. I hope when I’m missing the boat on an aspect of my faith you all don’t abandon me. Just give me a good old-fashioned “swat” of reason and documentation and I’ll return with my tail between my legs.
My faith has taken on many nuances over the years and I certainly do not hold myself up as an example of perfection. Among the sinning brethren, I am the greatest. I hope my maturity and spiritual evolution always leaves me a lot wiser, a little embarrassed for sub-conscious legalism, and really appreciative of brotherly love.
Never the less when the church abandons its role as moral compass we have neutered ourselves and will answer to an awesome God who will wonder where exactly we lost our courage. The cost is high and comes with being hated. I have a flash for you all, that is the only indication your uncompromised. Sucks huh?
