My son is 12 and now knows all the details about sex. The timing as to when this conversation needed to begin was thrust upon us by accident when he was ten and we were watching a show on giraffes.
For some odd reason I never equated the correlation between sex and giraffes as a topic that would come up anywhere outside of the bay area in California. My bad, apparently since soon enough into the show a pregnant giraffe started birthing her baby while walking around. For those not familiar with the birthing process of a twenty-foot high creature it goes something like this.
The baby began exiting her at this point undecipherable hind regions and after some hours of walking around it simply popped out and flopped to the ground. Meanwhile I’m thinking this was a natural way for my son to see Gods miraculous handiwork of being fruitful and multiplying taking place. Unfortunately I failed to realize that my boy was unfamiliar with the mechanics of this act when it came to the inclusion of female genitalia especially since this area is undecipherable in a giraffe. After it was over he looked at me with a face filled with complete confusion and asked me, and I quote,
“Dad, why did that giraffe just come out of the other giraffes butt?”
This was a good indication that a new milestone was about to be reached in my boy’s life.
I had the privilege and awesome responsibility to begin to explain the wonders and mysteries of the female anatomy. This specific female body part, one of my favorites I might add, made by God would have been extremely more difficult to describe had he not grown up with a little sister who not only is cute as a button but in her toddler years found great joy walking around the house without her pants. So he was given a constant live demo whether he was interested or not.
Then it occurred to me,
If there is any misconception most in need of a fix to the secular culture it is the idea that a.) Christians don’t like or have sex (Kind of dumb where do people think all the new Christians come from)? b) We think talking about it is sinful…Uh, no. Not talking about it is sinful. It is a gift from God, literally.
Remember context over content is the renewed minds way of engaging culture and showing some sign of intelligence amongst the philistines. So to reiterate as a Christian man I am aware of my wife’s loins being different than mine. I prefer it that way and find my longing to locate and utilize them as a God given gift to humanity. Funny, God thought so too. Take a gander at Song of Solomon to see what all the fuss is about.
The simple rule when it comes to mature themes as a Christian is self-evident. Is the hearer mature enough to receive the information you are about to espouse? We live in an information age of unprecedented proportions. Any Christian parent naïve enough not to realize how much sexual information your kids are privy to are not only doing your kids a disservice but the body as well.
We need a comprehensive course taught in churches with parents involved. If we need an easy starting point just get a clip of a giraffe giving birth, trust me that will get you scrambling for clarity!
