I have complained about the lack of turn signals being used in America in one of my DVD's awhile back. (Which one I'm unsure of as believe it or not I forget half the stuff I do on an old album cause I'm always working on a new one.)
I was really flabbergasted though as people even began stopping in the middle of the road to go left or right w/o a signal. ( probably to make it more difficult to know which direction your going to yell at them in time?) But the other day I figured out what started the lack of signals phenomenon. Do YOU know? Take a sec to guess before I tell you....ready?.............................cellphones!
People began holding the phone to their ear and were unable, in mid conversation, to get to the signal..so...since their conversation was more critical than, common courtesy..safety..AND , obeying the law, a new narcissistic pattern was inserted into society.
Phones used to come on cords which accomplished two important things 1) kept you in the designated "phone area" so I or anyone else in the restaurant / waiting area / checkout line , weren't subjected to your one way conversation reminiscent of a drunk or recently released schizophrenic . Cords were a leash to keep you from wandering all over the neighborhood but instead to stay in your own area where others can avoid your barking or having to watch you pee.
The other plus to the cord was it kept you from carrying on a phone conversation while driving. I know it seems nit-picky but I would just assume you focus on driving instead of your conversation telling your friend what time you think you'll arrive since YOU'RE GOING TO BE THERE IN A FEW MINUTES ANYWAY!
I find it telling that technology constantly seems to provide for the individual while isolating and dismissing the community. Making life easier and more convenient for me means how it affects you becomes irrelevant. I promise you will never see me driving my car while holding a phone to my ear , I have a hands free device! At least I always signal.

Bring Back the Phone Booth
Comments
Re: Bring Back the Phone Booth
Not only do a lot of these people not signal, but they get so engrossed in their conversations that they seem to think that everyone else on the road doesn't exist. They'll just change lanes mere inches in front of you without looking back or enter uncontrolled intersections at full speed without a glance in either direction or a tap on the brakes.
Re: Bring Back the Phone Booth
Actually, I live in Ohio. People NEVER used turn signals there! So at least for me, the cell phone had nothing to do with it.
Now, running stop signs and stop lights! That has everything to do with the cell phone. I have almost been run over twice by people going right through them with a cell phone on their ear. And just last week a man swore at me and shook his fist as he ran a stop light and almost broadsided me. I guess I interrupted his conversation. Re: Re: Bring Back the Phone Booth

Maybe in your part of Ohio, no one uses signals. Where I live in the great Buckeye state, only about 50% of the drivers have forgotten what the little stick on their steering column is for. Of those 50%, I'd say that 25% haven't really forgotten what it is for, they just forget when they are supposed to use it. I'm talking about the ones who wait to signal until they are halfway into your lane! You know the ones, they are usually the ones who are inches from your bumper when they change lanes.

Cell phones have added to the misery of human existence..........
Why? Dont get me wrong, I dont know how I'd live without one.. because if it werent for cell phones, we'd all be dead like we were before them... RIGHT? The main irritating problem with cell phones as far as I am concerned... is text messaging. I will never forget my first experience with my teen performing this skill in the car.... little tiny ticks and buttons and clicks and OH MY is it ever so annoying.... That girl can text faster than I can think. You have to press something one to four times to get one charater... when you're fast at it,, you have just become a nuisance. I asked her... why dont you just talk to your friend, for my sake, just talk, call them. The text device doubles as a phone you know? She says to me "I dont really like to talk on the phone"........ Except of course possibly to the numerous folks she talks to endlessly on the phone when she's not texting..... 4 little clicks for one symbol..... and we call it, technology. Maybe they should make speak texting.. where you speak.. "H" "E" "L" "L" "O".... thats one step, for one letter,,,, no clicks and ticks..... but technically,,, talking, which one could do by,, oh yeah,, calling the person.. Text messaging,,, is evil. jC Trackbacks
