Hey, I just returned from the T.V. correspondents dinner in D.C. I was invited by my new friend John Donvan who has done 2 Nightline pieces on me. It was weird to be dining with George W. and his wife. It was the first time I have ever been in the same room with a president of the United States AND come to find out, it's the first time a president has been in the same room with me.
I believe he was less impressed.
I ran into Jon Voight, Geraldo Rivera, Bill O'reilly, Wolf Blitzer, Brian Wilson, Nancy Pelosi, Karl Rove, Brian Williams, Joe Scarborough and was seated next to, and had a long conversation with, Charlie Rangel,.. nice guy.
Got to see Rove rap/dance which was not a pretty sight. Apparently it's true, conservatives are geeks. I also got to speak long and hard to John Donvan on the war in Iraq as well as his take on the difference between the news broadcast by the ( used to be ) big 3 networks , and Fox.
John and I differ on alot but we also found ALOT of common ground especially in ackowledging how complex and unknowable oftentimes is the outcome of the decisions our leaders make I loved the discussion. I am much more energized speaking to people I disagree with as long as it's informing, stimulating and respectful. This happens behind the scenes much more often than infront of the cameras where everyone is choosing a side and trying to destroy the other.
Every American should have the opportunity to talk to senators, congressman and other representitives as, trust me..they aren't geniuses. I'm just glad I'm only a comic. Much less pressure. P.S. ( the new album will be out in Aug)
